Video Games - The good, and bad

I believe video games can have a negative affect on society. Most video games can be come addictive which will lead to a lot of lost time which can be used to be doing something productive. Because of video games, the motivation to do homework is now basically nonexistent. Before, people did homework so they can have a sense of accomplishment in which they finish their homework. However, nowadays, people can play video games to feel like they accomplished something easier, and possibly faster.

However, video games can be quite a positive experience when growing up. In video games, you could potentially learn many things that you learn later in life, albeit in painful ways. Due to video games giving a virtual reality, people could experience doing new things through video games, allowing people who are physically unable, or time constricted to experience new things.

Review: League of Legends

League of Legends

For a while now, I've been playing this Strategy game called League of Legends. This game is roughly based on DotA, a custom map of the Real time strategy (RTS) game, Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne. This game is a hybrid of a Tower Defense and Hero Arena game.

Gameplay

Gameplay wise, this game is quite newbie friendly, which includes a nice tutorial game in order for people to learn how to play the game. However, many people who have played DotA before can easily adapt to this game, as it is quite similar to it.

Graphics
The graphics are quite up to date, with a cell shade style. However, due to this, many older computers may not be able to run it at full speed.

Sound
In this game, many heroes and units have individual sounds so that you can hear when they're coming. Also, some of the unit responses are quite neat, but could potentially be stuck in your mind for quite a long time. the announcer and the music are pleasing, bringing a nice atmosphere to the game.

Presentation
right when you load it up, it's quite easy to learn as it has it's own tutorial level in which the user can learn how to play. Overall the interface is quite clean and straightforward, but could use some more options for modifying the user interface.

Replay value
I believe this game has quite a potential of reaching DotA's status, as it's quite fun and competitive, but also newbie friendly. This game has quite a large friendly userbase that's really eager to help. Also, with the matchmaking system, you'll never play the with the same people twice, unless you arrange your own team with your friends.

Score : 87 / 100

Great upcoming game, but still not complete, as it doesn't have that many game modes yet, and lack of voice chat feature.

What are computer games?

In my opinion, Computer games are interactive activities that one can do on a computer. This activity could potentially decrease productivity by -1000%.

Jokes aside, I believe computer games are a great way to step away from reality, allowing us to exercise the creative part in our brains.

I believe a good game is a game that has high replay value, good graphics, and easy control schemes and game mechanics. Furthermore, I believe that to have a high replay value, it must have multiplayer.

Games with multiplayer always gives the player a different experience playing with other people, whether it's local 4 player to online with thousands of people playing at once.

Also, in my opinion, a bad game is a game that is released too early in order to finish development. Usually this happens when people are trying to make money too fast, causing the game to be underdeveloped, or recycled ideas, namely Guitar Hero. Also, a bad game uses graphics as its main attracting point. I believe that the gameplay is the most important part, while the graphics and environment are just to supplement it.

Operating Systems

Questions:

1. What is an operating system and what is its purpose?
software that controls the execution of computer programs.

2. What operating system do most computers come preloaded with?
Usually windows 7, and leopard on macs.

3. Besides personal computers, what other devices have operating systems?
Cell phones, ipods, and many other mobile systems.

4. Do all computers have operating systems? Explain
an os usually comes preloaded with an OS, however, a computer can exist without an os, take a calculator for example.

5. What are the three most common operating systems? Are there other operating systems? Explain.

Windows
Linux
Mac OS X

there are many others that are usually variations of Linux. Also, Google chrome OS just came out, so the battle for OSes has just begun.

6. What is one reason why operating systems are coded rather than physical circuits?
so that it can be easily upgraded and fixed.

7. What are the two main functions of an operating system?
controls the allocation of hardware resources, and controls the execution of programs.

8. What are the four types of operating systems?
Real time
Single User, Single task
Single User, Multi task
Multi User

9. What are the first actions the computer takes when you power it on?
"Boots Up", starting the OS.

10. What is the bootstrap loader? What is its function?
to load the Operating system.

11. How does the OS manage the processor?
the OS uses the system kernel that helps bridge connections with software and hardware in order to manage the system's resources

12. What does an operating system do when two processes are multi-tasking?
It manages system resources for both of them to run at the same time. However, the OS keeps running the tasks until the processes are "waiting"

13. What is thrashing?
A term used when more and more computer resources are being used in order to do less and less tasks.

14. What is virtual memory management?
"Tricks" the program into thinking that there is additional memory. However, this memory is physically allocated and could result in an overflow on the hard drive.

15. What is a driver?
A program the tells the computer how to interact with a peripheral device.

16. How can input/output capabilities of a system be enhanced?
getting a better more efficient central processing unit.

17. How do application program interfaces make it easier for programmers?
Helps the user easily interpret how to use the program visually.

18. What is a UI and GUI?
UI = user interface
GUI = graphical user interface

19. Why is Linux being open source significant?
Can be modified to will. Also, allows many bug fixes to occur faster.

20. What are some other devices that run on Linux?
Tivo, Linksys routers, and some mobile devices.

21. What are 3 things you found interesting about operating systems that you did not know before?

I did not know that many other devices such as Tivo and linksys routers run on Linux.

I also didn't know there were 4 different types of Operating Systems.

I also found it interesting that there are only 4 main operating systems that people use.

22. What is a question that you still have about operating systems?

With the emerging operating systems, how will program functionality and technological advances hinder the development of operating systems?

Networking

LAN - Local Area Network:
a network that is confined to a relatively small area.

Examples: Home networks, LAN Parties, etc.

WAN - Wide Area Network:
a network that connects major businesses, corporations or organizations in a relatively large area.'

Examples: Government networks, School network, etc.

-------------------

Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable - about 100 meters
Coaxial Cable - about 1000 feet for SD broadcasts. 300 feet for HD
Fiber Optic Cable - about 2000 meters.

----------------------

Router - Bridges connections within a network. "Translates" information into a usable network connection.

Bridge - Enables communication between devices on a network, and combines them to other networks

Switch - Allows peer to peer connections with devices on a network.

------------------------

Peer to Peer : it enables users to share files with each others computers. Limewire or any other peer to peer downloading client is an example.

usually cheaper, but relies on the security and speed of each others computer. Can have latency issues.

Client / Server : Uses a dedicated file server for functions in a network.
Download sites such as megaupload, mediafire are examples.

Usually more reliable, and faster, however it's pretty expensive and needs to be maintained.

Building or Buying

Give three advantages to building a PC and three advantages to buying a PC.

Buying:

Convenient - Saves time. It allows you to buy a preconfigured system that contains all the components inside.

Bundled with OS and other software - Usually is bundled with an Operating System and some software. Usually the software can range from a multimedia player to antivirus.

Warranty and support - Most computers come with warranty, so if your computer breaks down, or you just have trouble with a certain component, you can easily call up tech support or bring it back to the store for some help.

Building:

Cheaper - Cuts out the middle man, so that when you're buying specific parts, you're not also paying for the license for that company to use it on their computer system. Also, you pay for what you need, so this allows people to get the only things they need for their computer at a cheaper cost.

Customizable - You get what you want. All the components are bought and installed by you, so that you're putting in what you NEED in. With this route you have a wide selection of different parts for different tasks, like graphics cards for example. You wouldn't really need a high end QUAD SLI Nvidia graphics card if you're just using the computer to go on Facebook and play the occasional Farmville or other flash game timewaster. However if you're a gamer and you're not on a budget, GO FOR IT!

Satisfaction - Building a PC is a valuable learning system. Also, the satisfaction of building something from scratch and having it work is a great feeling.

------------------

I believe building your own computer is the best option. However, it's not the best for most people. to build a computer, you must have a vast knowledge of computer components and electronics experience. You must know what plugs in to where, if it's compatible, what the parts are for, the power supply, etc. Nonetheless, building a computer is usually cheaper as it cuts out the middle man, and it doesn't leave your computer with "bloatware" that's usually bundled with preconfigured system. You may have to pay for your OS, but it's a nice fresh install instead of having all that bundled junk that HP users usually have. Also, with building your own computer, you get to have what you want, meaning that you can customize every single aspect about your computer. Building could take a lot of time, but it's cheaper and rewarding in the long run.

Introduction to Computer Systems

What do you already know about computer systems?

I know quite a lot about computer systems, having used Windows 98/ME/XP/Vista/7 since I can remember and of course, troubleshooting many PCs and laptops that my relatives have told me to fix.

What do you want to learn about computer systems?

I want to learn more about the internal components of the computer, while I do have knowledge of the parts and what it does, I want to learn how to build my own computer, and learn how to do advanced stuff like BIOS editing.

1. What is the tower? - What does it look like? - What is its function? A tower, shown here, is an enclosure that houses the internal parts of a computer. These parts could range from the Hard Drive, CPU, fan, etc.

2. What is RAM? - What does it look like? - What is its function? - What does RAM stand for?

RAM stands for Random Access Memory which allows the computer to perform processes that require it to access and save memory randomly.

3. What is a Hard Drive? - What does it look like? - What is its function?

A hard drive is a disk drive that holds and stores information on a magnetic or optical disk that reads and writes information on it.

4. What is a DVD and DVD drive? - What do they look like? - What is their function?

a DVD usually stands for Digital Versatile Disc which allows people to store large files on a disk. A DVD drive allows a computer to "accept" and interpret information on a DVD.

5. What is a Ethernet cable? - What does it look like? - What is its function?

An Ethernet cable looks like an oversized phone cable, which is used for Local Area Networks and connecting to your modem or router.

6. What is a motherboard? - What does it look like? - What is its function?

A motherboard is the primary circuit board that "holds" and allows connections to necessary computer interfaces.

7. What is an IDE and SATA cable? - What do they look like? - What is their function?

Both are different ways for connecting a Hard Drive to the motherboard.

8. What is USB? - What does it look like? - What is its function? - What does USB stand for?

USB stands for Universal Serial Bus allows many computer peripherals, such as a mouse, keyboard, printer, etc. to be connected through a "universal" input.

9. What is a video card? - What does it look like? - What is its function?

A Video card is responsible for generating and outputting images to display. Some video cards also support video capturing, allowing you to record videos on your computer.

10. What is a PCI card? - What does it look like? - What is its function? What does PCI stand for?

a PCI card could be many different computer peripherals, such as a network card, sound card, video card, usb ports, etc. They all are able to connect through the motherboard using a PCI system.

Magazine - GQ

The Images I only used 3 different images.

2 of them was my recent picture from the Snowball formal dance.

and the other was the GQ logo, which can be found here:

GQ Logo (Online Image) Available http://www.mavenmedia.co.za/images/gq_logo.jpg, March 3rd, 2010

to summarize, I did many things on this image.

First, I carefully cropped Camden and myself from our formal pictures, and placed it in a blank transparent new image.

Then, to match GQ's style, I added a gray background and tried making our bodies blend in with the background seamlessly.

then I added the GQ logo and change the colours to match what we were wearing and the overall colour scheme of the magazine.

Finally, I then added some finishing touches, such as different article titles, and "hooks" in the GQ style. I went through many of these magazines in order to fully emulate what their style is.

For some text, I added some glows in order for some more clarity around the dark areas of the magazine. however, due to jpeg compression it seems like the text still looks a bit blurry still...

I chose GQ because I like their colour themes on their magazines. Also, I've seen quite a lot of celebrities that has been on the covers of GQ.

Visual Balance

I believe I deserve a 4 because I took the time to make sure that all the elements were balanced on the page and edited the image.

Positive - Negative space

http://www.layersmagazine.com/negative-space.html

After reading this article, I learned quite a lot of things.

Using the space you're given is an important part in creating an image. For example, using a normal 8.5" by 11" page with the intention of just writing 1 word on it would be a waste, as well as being visually.. unattractive. The blank space will just overpower the word too much.

Also, the NEGATIVE space is important as well, since if there's too much on the screen, some people would feel too overwhelmed from the amount of information on it.

So in general, the most important point I learned from this article was the to effectively balance the negative and positive space.

Don't just focus on the main subject, focus on what isn't being focused on.

Colour Combos

(In reverse order)
1. Monochromatic
2. Complementary
3. Split-Complementary
4. Double-Complementary
5. Anagolous
6. Triad

I believe I deserve a 4 because I worked really hard on it. Because of this, I finished quite early.

REFLECTION

1. What did I do in class today?
Changing the hue and saturation values of this pokeball image.

2. What did I learn?
How to use Fireworks even more, it's not as easy and fast as photoshop, but it gets the job done.

3. What did I find interesting?
How many of the tools I used in Photoshop appear in Fireworks, namely the Magic Wand.

4. What questions do I have about what I learned?
I wonder why adobe can't just get rid of fireworks and just make Photoshop and the other Adobe effects the standard for macromedia programs... they own them anyways...

5. What connections did I make to previous ideas or questions?
Fireworks is a bit more complex to use compared to Photoshop.

Logo Banner and Colour Theory.

I recently uploaded my new banner, consisting of 4 different images, and some nice looking font.

I believe I deserve a 4, because I incorporated quite a lot of elements on my banner.

First, I created the overall background by creating rectangles that were grey, black, white, and inbetween. Then I added some blur effects to make it seem like it's zooming in and spinning.

Then I grabbed 3 images, from left to right:

A picture of L Lawliet, from the popular Death Note Manga series,

L Lawliet Fan art (Online Image) Available http://cataclysm-x.deviantart.com/art/Death-Note-L-83145184, April 17, 2008

A picture of the Triforce, most commonly associated with the Legend of Zelda series,

Triforce (Online Image) Available http://5995260108.deviantart.com/art/Triforce-81074049, March 26, 2008

and a picture of my Electric Guitar, taken by Lou Khawaja. I used the source image from my USB drive.

Each layer was about 20% Transparency, so that my original background could still be seen.

Then afterwards, I decided to put my full name onto it. I wanted it to look flashy and stand out, so I added some more zoom effects, and arranged it diagonally across my banner.

To end it off, I knew it was going to put the title of my blog in the image, so I decided to put a 20% transparency Rectangular white box so that the clarity of the Blog title will be crisp, while maintaining clarity of the images behind it.

I also chose the monotone colour scheme to match my blog.

------------------------------------------
Alright, after going through the website, here are the answers to the questions.

What is the difference between shade and tint?
Shade is the Colour produced when added with Black
Tint is the colour produced when added with White

What is the colour system used for printing?
The CMYK colour system. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black)

How can you ensure proper colour rendering in print?
Work within the CMYK colour spectrum, or selecting the proper colours in a CMYK pallette.

What are complementary colours? Give an example
Colours that are opposite to each other on the colour wheel. For example, Orange and Purple

What are tertiary colours? Give an example
Colours that are a mixture of both Primary and Secondary colours.

What is meant by a visually advancing colour?
A colour that is usually warm or saturated that has less visual weight on the passive colours.

What could cause vibrating boundaries to occur?
When you "stack" opposite colours on to each other.

How can you find a complementary colour without a colour wheel?
Eyes. You can stare at the colour for a long time, then look at a white surface. The After image is the complementary colour. Or you can easily invert (CTRL + I) the colours in Photoshop.

What is an after image?
It's when the rods and cones in our eyes starts to fatigue due to looking at a coloured object for a long period of time. This causes an after image.

What is a monochromatic colour relationship?
colours in the shade or tint of the same hue.

What is an analogous colour relationship?
Colours located next to each other on the colour wheel

What is contrast?
The difference between 2 or more colours.

What could cause simultaneous contrast to occur?
When opposing or clashing colours or placed next to each other.

Name and describe three of Itten’s Colour Contrasts
Contrast of Extension: Assigning colours of different weighting approriate areas.

Contrast of Hue: The placing of different hues of a colour next to each other. The bigger the gap the higher the contrast.

Contrast of Complements: Using colour wheel opposites next to each other.

How do you determine the dominant colour?
The colour with the largest area.

How can you create an accent with colour?
small area, contrasting hues.

What is the difference between contrast dominant and value dominant?
Contrast dominance is the Dominance between contrasts of colours

Value dominant is the overall saturation of the colours.

What is one method of identifying possible options for colour schemes?
Using the colour wheel to find out colours that go well together.

My colour scheme

Aftermath

Alright, so after presenting, I felt a great relief afterwards.

I was also blown away by Claire's presentation because I've never seen visuals done like that before on Powerpoint.

However, I wish I could've condensed some of my information on my presentation, I feel that there was too much info and that I could have summarized it a bit more.

Last.fm

Alright, so in class today, we watched this video created by Dutch "think tanks" on what they think Web 3.0 will be and how it will affect our lives... I'm excited for it.

Afterwards, we continued on researching on our Web 2.0 website. I'm eager to start working on the powerpoit tomorrow, for I didn't get much sleep so I'll just do it tomorrow.

1. What did I do in class today?
Researched on our Web 2.0 site.

2. What did I learn?
The functionality of what Web 3.0 could be for us in the future. I'd be interested in a Pet collar thing that tweets wherever it goes, at a 30 minute interval or something.

3. What did I find interesting?
Again, Web 3.0 I'm excited for it and how machines will be able to "learn" from us and what we're looking for.

4. What questions do I have about what I learned?
I wonder what current Web 2.0 sites will be able to upgrade to Web 3.0 without changing it's original functionality.

5. What connections did I make to previous ideas or questions?
Facebook with Web 3.0? So.. Facebook will show us less posts of Farmville on our news feed? SWEET.

Day 3 - Starting on the Web 2.0 project, ->reflection

alright, so today in class we learned about Web 2.0 and how it is different from Web 1.0

Well, aside from the differences of the names of the versions, We learned that a Web 2.0 site has a two way relationship with both the audience and the creator.

In Web 1.0, the reader was able to get information, with the author creating that information.

However, in Web 2.0, we learned that both the Author and the Audience both have a share in creating content for the site.

So for my project, I chose last.fm, since I use it on a constant basis.

here's my profile if anyone want to see: CLICKY!

So yea, I'm ready to rock this presentation!

------------------------

Reflection:

1. What did I do in class today?

We learned about Web 2.0 and how it affects our daily lives.

2. What did I learn?

I learned the differences between Web 2.0 and Web 1.0

3. What did I find interesting?

Mr. Powell mentioned about a Web 3.0

I did some research and I heard that Web 3.0 sites could come out during this decade.

Even though I am still unclear about some of the differences between Web 2.0 and 3.0, I'm still curious to what it could bring to us in the near future.

4. What questions do I have about what I learned?

I'm still a bit confused about Web 3.0 and it's expectations... but I'll research about it later on.

5. What connections did I make to previous ideas or questions?

I kinda find it ironic that I at first didn't know what the definition of a Web 2.0 website was, even though I've been on Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, etc, a lot!

Reflection - (Questions from Mr. Powell's website)

1. What did I do in class today?

Today in class I learned how to cite sources. From citing images, sound, and even video, I now know how to cite sources properly for educational purposes.

2. What did I learn?

The proper format on how to properly cite sources.

3. What did I find interesting?

I found it interesting that no matter what media you are citing, you HAVE to present a date that it was created or accessed.

4. What questions do I have about what I learned?

How do you cite other forms of media? such as Javascript, Flash, etc?

The actual first post

I expect to learn about the basics of programming.

I plan on taking the techOne program at SFU, so I need to know a bit of programming to ease the stress load of what I learn in the course.

However, I have had some experience with Javascript and Visual basic, but since it was 2 years ago, I don't really remember much.

I am also looking forward to 3D modelling.

2 years ago, I went to this Media Arts week at VanArts where they showed us how to make 3D Models and composite using Maya and Shake, respectively.

The week went by so fast, yet I learned quite a lot of what goes on during animation and visual effects creation.

FIRST.
